Tourist Guide Course

1. What are the minimum qualifications to become a Tourist Guide?
  • SPM with minimum passes of 6 subjects including Bahasa Malaysia.
  • Candidates with Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE) from the year 1978 onwards should have at least 5 years experience in the tourism industry. These candidates will go through interviews by Ministry of Tourism Malaysia.
  • Certificates, diplomas and degrees obtained should be approved and recognised by the Ministry of Education of Malaysia.
  • Those who do not meet the above minimum requirements but have been involved and have at least 5 years of experience in the tourism industry, will still have the chance to apply through interviews by the Ministry of Tourism officers.
2. What is the process involved to become a Tourist Guide?
  • Contact the relevant Tourism Training Institute of your choice to undertake the Basic Tourist Guide course. List of the Tourism Training Institute is available as listed.
  • Attend and pass the Tourist Guide Basic Course which will approximately take about 4 to 6 months.
  • Undertake written and practical exams conducted by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia.
  • Results of the exams will be released within 30 working days after the exams.
  • Candidate who passed the exam will obtained a letter and a certificate from the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia as well as Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia from the Department of Skills Development through the Tourism Training Institute. These candidates are then required to attend Mesra Malaysia course organised by Tourism Training Institute or Malaysian Tourist Guide Council and facilitated by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia.
  • Successful candidates are required to submit to the Licensing Department, Ministry of Tourism Malaysia the following documents within 3 months after the issuance of the certificate for passing the Tourist Guide Basic Course exam by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia:
·         Tourist Guide Basic Course Cerificate
·         Mesra Malaysia Certificate
·         Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia
·         1 most recent passport-sized colour photograph
·         A copy of identity card
·         A copy of the membership receipt of the Tourist Guides Association.
·         A copy of a detailed health certificate from any Government hospitals/ licensed medical practitioners.
  • Tourist Guide Probation license will be issued within 5 days after submission of full set of completed documents.
  • The Tourist Guides will have to attend and pass the Tourist Guide Confirmation Course after 2 years of probationary period and also 3 Continuous Tourism Related Education (CTRE) course in order to obtain a permanent Tourist Guide license.
  • Tourist Guides are required to attend at least 6 CTRE courses within 2 years as a prerequisite for renewal of Tourist Guide license.
3. How much does it cost to become a Tourists Guide?

The costs of the Tourist Guide Basic Course varies from each Tourism Training Institution to another depending on the services and facilities provided. Currently, the fees range approximately from RM5,000.00 – RM6,000.00.

4. What kind of career advancement can a Tourist Guide look forward to?

An existing Tourist Guides can upgrade themselves by adding various languages to their badges. Foreign language guides are highly demanded in the market today. For Tourist Guides who love to teach and are good at it, with enough experience, they can be lecturers and examiners at some of the selected Tourism Training Institutes. With sufficient experience in the business and financial capital, a Tourist Guide can even venture into his or her own tourism related business such as travel and tour agency, hotels and resorts.

5. What is the difference between City Guide and Nature Guide?

City Guide
Guiding is allowed around the city throughout Malaysia.
Attend and pass The Tourist Guide Basic Course in order to obtain the City Guide license. The course duration is approximately 4 to 6 months which are conducted by selected Tourism Training Institutes that are registered with Ministry of Tourism. List of certified Tourism Training Institutes is as listed
The colour of the license is blue.

Nature Guide
Guiding is allowed for specified localize nature or eco-related locations.
Attend and pass The Nature Guide Course to obtain the Nature Guide licence. The course duration is approximately 2 weeks which is conducted by Jabatan PERHILITAN.
The colour of the license is green.
